misuse of technology
building a surveillance society
while technological discoveries were shaped first for military purposes for many years, then for commercial purposes, the human-centered approach was often bypassed, and the number of services that actually solve problems or provide benefits has not progressed at the same pace as the technology. instead of liberating and empowering people in every sense, developing technology aims to surveil and weaken them by toying or deceiving them.
in recent years, platforms' authentication technologies, developed in the name of security, also directly serve the purpose of building a surveillance society. while investments in data protection and security technologies, and therefore discoveries, are increasing, platforms can avoid their costs by selling their users' private data, from identity information to their private lives, to commercial organizations or sharing it with government agencies. machines trained with the stolen or already existing data of millions of people are rapidly closing the gap with real people, making identity theft easier and more widespread.
the latest technologies herald artificial intelligence companions or lovers as the solution to these loners, who number in the millions. and there is no shortage of people who admire this dystopia and would surrender themselves to it.
"technology is neutral. whether it is good or bad depends on how we use it." - william gibson
