algorithms

prisons of the free world

with the widespread use of the internet, people found a way to freely cross borders and identities, to communicate with people from all over the world, to express their opinions openly with anonymous identities and to exist danger-free with their real personalities, but this was short-lived.

with the rise of platforms, social media quickly became the main way to use the internet. algorithms redrew borders and re-spatialized people by separating them with language barriers. even if they live in the same geography and speak the same language, they divided people into smaller groups based on their status and political views, trapping everyone in echo chambers. this exacerbated polarization and isolation in society.

today it's harder to overcome these algorithms than it is to overcome real borders.
